In this method, plant material like flowers and trim are put into a container then the liquid solvent is run through the plant matter to strip it of cannabinoids and flavours and transfer them into the liquid. The only drawback with this method is that solvents can leave traces of impurities in the finished product. Along with that, some solvents remove chlorophyll from the plant with cannabinoids and flavours which gives the CBD oil a greener colour and bitter taste.
Everyone knows that carbon dioxide is a unique molecule that can function as any state of matter. Whether its a solid, liquid or gas, depending upon the pressure and temperature it is kept under. That is because variables like pressure and temperature have to be kept very specific in a CO2 extraction. The CO2 extraction is usually done with a piece of equipment called “closed-loop extractor”
This equipment has 3 chambers where the first chamber holds the solid and pressurised CO2 which is also known as dry ice. The second chamber contains all the dry plant material and the third chamber separates the finished product.
While performing the extraction, the solid CO2 from the first chamber is pumped into the second chamber with the plant material where the second chamber is kept at specific temperature and pressure which makes CO2 behave more like a liquid so it can run through the plant materials to extract its chemicals and flavours.
After that, the CO2 cannabinoid mixture is pumped into the third chamber where it is kept at lower pressure and higher temperature so that the CO2 gas rises at the top while the CBD hemp oil containing chemicals and flavours fall at the bottom and is collected for consumption.
